Commerce Department barring hosting or transferring internet traffic associated with apps.
The Department of Commerce announced on Friday that the United States would be continuing its efforts to block the apps of TikTok and WeChat from doing business in the country. Both apps are owned by ByteDance, a Chinese parent company. According to the release, app stores will be banned from allowing users to download the app beginning Sunday, September 20.
According to Secretary Ross, “The only real change as of Sunday night will be [users] won’t have access to improved apps, updated apps, upgraded apps or maintenance.” However, on November 12 it will no longer be legal for hosting or transferring internet traffic. TikTok said in a statement that it disagreed with and was disappointed by the Trump administration’s decision.
